Well, not for the general election...McCain congratulates Obama for his Democratic nomination...Let's hope that on Wednesday, he will be congratulating Obama for yet another historic and sweet victory!

Janet Porter, Are You A Christian For REAL?

A friend has just forwarded me an article by self-righteous Janet Porter. In her article "You cannot be a Christian and vote for Obama", this far-right conservative who proudly fights to "win a cultural war" in the US (according to her website), writes...wait for it...

"To all those who name the name of Christ who plan to willfully disobey Him by voting for Obama, take warning. Not only is our nation in grave danger, according to the Word of God, so are you."

Well, I am a Christian who's praying for Obama's victory and I am proud of it . I'm pretty sure that's not a sin whatsoever! I also believe that your article is a first class mind control and brainwashing propaganda! It's kind of hilarious and sad at the same time. It just amazes me how some "Christians" love to manipulate the vulnerable into doing what they want them to by using fear and the distortion of the Scriptures (the Bible).

Dear Janet,

I am redeemed by the blood of Jesus, but according to your article, I am going to hell. So, do you assume that God's grace can cover every sin committed by a Christian, such as gossip, greed, lying, pride, etc.--EXCEPT voting for the wrong person (at least "wrong" from your assessment)?

Jesus said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Weighing all the factors (including abortion but also the hundreds of Biblical references to caring for the poor), I may or may not be making a mistake in voting for Senator Obama. But I am NOT committing a willful sin, regardless of what your article says. And even if I were, I praise God for the fact that His grace is vastly bigger than my sin.

I am sorry that your beliefs about God put Him in such a small box that He can only save those who belong to the Republican Party.

...An organizer at the rally rattled off the addresses of early vote sites nearby that would be open after the event.

Photographer Joe Eddins and I headed over to the closest one and found a steady line of voters hoping to cast ballots early. Most seemed to be Obama supporters and several had come from the rally. Nearly all the voters were black.

Also at the polling site was a group of loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. Nearly all were white.

Comment from a European reader: Some Conservatives believe that Democrats should get over the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections and move on. But they don't realize that most people worldwide (including world Leaders) do not believe that George W. Bush was ever elected democratically. Hence, the lack of respect for him in the world from the ginning of his presidency. Bush foreign policy just made matters worse.

Bob Schieffer: Colin Powell ‘Saying Aloud What a Lot of Republicans Are Saying Privately’

According to Bob Schieffer, Powell's words echoed the criticism of many Republicans.

On Monday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Maggie Rodriguez discussed former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama with Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer:

Maggie Rodriguez: "What do you think privately the McCain campaign is making of this endorsement?"

Bob Schieffer: "Well, I'm sure they don't like it but, you know, this is -- what Colin Powell said yesterday and why it was so riveting to hear him, he was saying aloud what a lot of Republicans are saying privately, I think, or at least what I've heard some Republicans tell me. They think the pick of Sarah Palin reflects on John McCain's judgment, they think the campaign has turned too nasty and is not inclusive. I think Colin Powell said aloud yesterday what some Republicans, at least, are saying privately."

   National Review writer Kathleen Parker takes another big step away from the GOP, declaring that Republicans "do not, in fact, deserve to win this time, and someone [Chris Buckley] had to remind them why."

John McCain and Sarah Palin have stopped talking about the issues, and have instead launched a strategy relying on fear-mongering, racial divisions, and hate. The result is McCain/Palin supporters saying "kill him!" "terrorist!" "traitor," and more, at rallies, with the McCain campaign playing dumb in response.It's outrageous and it must stop.

Together, we can show that Americans of all races won't stand for this.

McCain-Palin rallies have started to look more like mob scenes rather than
political events. The candidates keep asking "who is the real Barack Obama?" (a question that also kicks off almost every McCain television ad). In response, supporters have yelled "terrorist!" and "traitor!" And the venom goes beyond Obama--one McCain/Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at a Black member of a news crew, saying "sit down, boy."

McCain and Palin are going down a dangerous path. Watching some of their supporters being interviewed shows the kind of fear their campaign is stoking and exploiting. McCain and Palin are clearly in the driver's seat. They've personally made it a point to use "terrorist" and "Obama" in the same sentence; they have surrogates repeatedly refer to him by his middle-name; and they keep pushing the discredited guilt-by-association smears that have long been debunked.

All of it plays on the much more sinister rumors in anonymous smear emails which claim Obama is Muslim (a myth designed to tap into anti-Muslim bigotry), anti-American, and is somehow connected with terrorists. This strategy is powerful because Obama is Black, and it's designed to make Obama's race a disadvantage without appearing overtly racist.

As Americans of all stripes, we've seen how Barack Obama's historic candidacy has moved our friends and family to have a more honest conversation about race in this country. It's inspired a lot of people to step out of their comfort zone and confront racism in their own communities, with their friends, neighbors and families.

In the final days of this campaign, we can't let John McCain and Sarah Palin drag so many Americans down. If enough of us act, we can create a powerful story about Black people and our allies of all races standing together against race-baiting and fear-mongering coming from the McCain/Palin campaign. But it will take a lot of us speaking in unison.

Obama Won The Debate Again: 3 for 3!

CBS News and Knowledge Networks conducted a nationally representative poll of uncommitted voters to get their immediate reaction to the third and last presidential debate. Once again, it was a clean sweep for Barack Obama:

53% of the uncommitted voters surveyed identified Barack Obama as the winner of the debate. 22% said John McCain won. 25% saw the debate as a draw. Before the debate, 54% thought Obama shared their values. After the debate, that the number rose to 64%. --52% thought McCain shared their values before the debate, and 55% voters thought so afterwards.

CNN gave the debate to Obama by 58% to 31%.

I watched the debate live and I was impressed by Sen. Obama's performance, knowledge and overall style. Sen. McCain spent so much time attacking his opponent, he neglected to show how his administration would differ from Bush. Among other things, McCain's constant invocation of "Joe the plumber" was irritating. ZERO??? Blink...blink...blink :-o
McCain asks the amount of the fine that Barack Obama would impose on small business owners for not providing health care. Barack Obama answers “Zero.” McCain is taken aback by this apparently unexpected answer. So much so that he looks like a “deer in the headlights”. I cannot help laughing every time I watch this video (just listen to Obama and watch McCain's reaction...hilarious).

To raise money, she improperly used her City Hall office and equipment, city records show. William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime. The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein's government. What Right Wingers Mean When They Call Obama A "Socialist"

While searching information about the campaign trail, I came across an interesting piece on the American Prospect website by Adam Serwer dated October 13, 2008. Serwer article reads:

The hysterical accusations of socialism from conservatives echo similar accusations leveled at black leaders in the past, as though the quest for racial parity were simply a left-wing plot. Obama may not actually be a socialist or communist, but his election would strike another powerful blow to the informal racial hierarchy that has existed in America since the 1960s, when it ceased being enforced by law. This hierarchy, which holds that whiteness is synonymous with American-ness, is one conservatives are now instinctively trying to preserve. Like black civil-rights activists of the 1960s, Obama symbolizes the destruction of a social order they see as fundamentally American, which is why terms like "socialism" are used to describe the threat.

This phenomenon extends beyond Obama's candidacy. The conservative explanation for the mortgage crisis falls neatly into this narrative, too; the country is at risk because Democrats allowed minorities to disrupt the natural social order by becoming homeowners. Never mind that this defies all data, logic, and history, the narrative resonates because it allows Obama, a living symbol of black folks rising above "their station," to become a focus for conservative economic anxieties.

Obama Takes Double-Digit Lead Over McCain

The latest Washington Post/ABC News poll indicates that Obama is pulling away from McCain, establishing a 10-point lead in the race for the White House by a commanding 53 percent to 43 percent.

McCain had tried to overcome sliding poll numbers by aggressively attacking Obama, but the Washington Post/ABC News poll indicates that the pit-bull style may have worked against McCain and Palin.

However, Obama's lead depends on a shift in basic partisanship that will need to stand the test of turnout come Nov. 4. Those who haven't definitely made up their minds are still more than enough to change the shape of the race so keep on working hard people! We need to win this.

Sarah Palin: Obama Said Babies Were A Punishment

You all may remember a remark Obama made Speaking about sex education at an event in Pennsylvania last Spring. As I predicted I knew that Palin who knows all about educating children to prevent teen sex had the nerve to bring up at a rally today about Obama's comment. She is a woman who is above the law and did abuse her power in firing the state employee. I warn you all that this will be one of many topics that conservatives will distort the next few weeks. We need to make sure that people do not fall for the misleading lies. Sarah Palin's charm and good looks cover up the true nightmare of a politician she really is.

Obama said, according to the Christian Broadcasting Network, that he will educate his young daughters but "if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at the age of 16."

Tommy Vietor, an Obama spokesman, sought to clarify the senator's comments in an e-mail to The Hill Monday afternoon:

"What Sen. Obama said and what he believes is clear -- children are 'miracles,' but we have a problem when so many children are having children," Vietor said. "As Sen. Obama said on Saturday -- and on many other occasions -- parents have a responsibility to teach their children about values and morals to help make sure they are not treating sex casually. And while he understands the passions on both sides of this difficult issue, Sen. Obama believes we can all agree that we should be taking steps to reduce the number of teen pregnancies and abortions in this country."

GOP and Conservatives Oppose McCain Mortgage Plan

As if the Branchflower report weren't bad enough, McCain is taking a lot of friendly fire over his mortgage plan. John McCain is facing a fresh round of anger from members of his own party deeply opposed to the Arizona senator's proposal for the federal government to purchase troubled mortgage loans. Basically, it would have the government buy distressed mortgages from the banks and then renegotiate terms with the homeowners. The plan has been harshly criticized by economists who endorsed McCain, Republican congressmen, and conservative bloggers. What's a candidate to do when the home team is razzing you?
